These Jem Casting Choices Are Truly Outrageous

We're still a little miffed that Jem and the Holograms didn't get a big-screen adaptation in its '80s heyday, because, you know, we totally would have hosted an epic movie outing followed by a roller-rink party and sleepover. Just saying.
Still, we're not above letting our inner children loose from time to time. In other words, we're pleased as punch to hear the cartoon's film version is finally getting underway. Ladies and gentlemen, Hollywood has found its Jem.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nashville star Aubrey Peeples has been cast in the lead role of pink-haired pop star Jem and her alter ego Jerrica Benton. That's her up top in the film's first official poster, alongside her just-cast Holograms bandmates.

Peeples, whose singing voice will come in handy for those "contagious" tunes, has already shared an Instagram snap with her new costars. That's Hayley Kiyoko (The Fosters) and Aurora Perrineau (Pretty Little Liars) as Aja and Shana of the Holograms, plus Stefanie Scott of Disney's A.N.T. Farm as Jem's sister and bandmate Kimber. We can just about picture them with candy-colored wigs and glittery makeup, can't you?
The film, currently in production, is being directed by Jon M. Chu, the auteur behind such cinematic classics as Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Step Up 2: The Streets. Brace yourself for electrifying concert scenes and some "truly outrageous" dance moves. (The Hollywood Reporter)
