Certain beauty products — think NARS blush in Orgasm, Clinique's Black Honey lipstick — are so good, they're practically famous. And, while we do love so many of those well-known, well-loved products with a loyal following, we've been wondering why others have been quietly flying under the radar. With that in mind, meet our new beauty series, Cult Classics, in which we'll introduce you to the products you really, truly should know about (and try, like, right now). They're not brand new, but trust us: They've got staying power.
I am a big enough woman to admit when I have a problem. And, I have a huge problem with metallic eyeshadows in that when I see one, I want it on my face. Like any great love affair, though, this devotion has its ups and downs. Mainly, I find a beautiful foiled liner or shadow I love, I apply it, then I weep silently a few hours later when said molten metal has rubbed away with only a few stray shimmer particles left behind to even show it existed. I lead a tragic existence, I know.
Then I discovered By Terry's Ombre Blackstar, and my entire makeup game changed. This (admittedly pricey) magic wand is technically an eyeshadow, but I've been known to use it as a liner on the reg. According to the brand, it features a "melting" texture, a "tattoo-hold," and "radiance-trapping shine."
Now, I like to call a spade when I see a spade, and that is a whole lot of clever marketing speak right there. But, amazingly, it's also completely true. So seamlessly does this shadow glide on that it appears to have melted from the pen and onto your eyes, and the sparkle on this is like no other metallic product I've used. Don't even get me started on the hold — it does not freaking budge.
My preferred method of wearing this is to line my top lashline with a liquid black liner, then dab my Ombre Blackstar into the corners of my eyes and smudge it in heavily on my bottom waterline. Normally, any liner — no matter how longwear it says it is — that I apply to my waterline is gone in (Nicholas Cage style) 60 seconds.
I have watery eyes that would make a lab rat proud, but aren't conducive to keeping eye makeup in place, primers be damned. But, this magical talisman stays in place all day and continues to look as vibrant as the moment I applied it. In fact, my one gripe (besides that hefty price tag, of course) is that it takes quite a bit of cleansing oil and rubbing to get it out of my waterline.
My personal favorite hues are the 24K-worthy Beyond Gold (it looks amazing paired with a neutral smoky eye) and the delightfully minty Fizzy Jade (awesome when used with the black-liner method above). But, you really cannot go wrong with any of these stunning shades.
As someone who has shelled out for more metallic liners and shadows than I can count, believe me when I say this particular product is truly without comparison. If you're as addicted to the molten metal look as I am, stop wasting your hard-earned cash on sub-par shimmers and invest in one (or three) of these wonderful wands. Your wallet may be disappointed, but I guarantee you when I say that you won't.
