Juliette Lewis Talks Rebellion, Rehab, & Not Faking It

Juliette Lewis is partial to marking milestones in a memorable fashion. The actress-turned-musician-turned-actress is marking her 40th year on the planet with a turn as The Edit's cover star. And, this gig is most certainly inspired by her newly acquired love for fashion. “At 40, my eyes are open and excited by designers in a different way. I didn’t lean on that side of myself when I was younger,” Lewis explains to The Cut. Judging by the fabulous edit of pretty-and-prim dresses by Erdem and Givenchy the actresses gets to wear, she’s certainly found her calling.
In an intimate interview, Lewis discusses her long and varied career in Hollywood. She made her film debut at 18, opposite Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsese’ Cape Fear, and her career went from strength-to-strength with Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. “I just went for parts that would keep my interest,” she says. “I never wanted to do two-dimensional characters.”
It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though, as Lewis battled drug addiction and entered rehab at only 22. It was her rebel-by-nature persona that singled her out from the conformers: “I didn’t understand the glamour of getting dressed up and going to parties,” she states. “I wasn’t concerned with learning how to fake it.” And, it was this reluctance to conform that inspired her break from acting, as Lewis put her career on hold to go on tour with her band, Juliette and the Licks. “It was a real big thing to jump off the acting bandwagon…I always liken it to cutting the umbilical cord.”
Lewis returned to her first love, acting, with a role in August: Osage County. And, now the actress is more content than ever. On starring with Meryl Streep, Lewis says, “When you work with the best, there’s such beauty in it. It’s what you hope for in this business and you get a handful of times. I’m old enough now to appreciate that.”
