Joan Smalls Proves The Supermodel Era Isn’t Over

The supermodel era is over, said no one, now that we've seen Joan Smalls on the January cover of Elle. It's exciting to see a model back on a major fashion magazine cover — and, with a cover line describing her as "the world's real top model," we have a feeling we're going to see a lot more of her face in print. Another thing not going anywhere, as revealed by this cover? Ombré. Sorry.
Elle.com has a preview of the story about Smalls, and we have to say, they've definitely filled us with anticipation for the entire feature. No surprise that Smalls is as interesting to talk to as she is to look at, dropping nuggets of wisdom like this one on the lack of diversity in fashion: "People hide behind the word aesthetic. They say, ‘Well, it’s just that designer’s aesthetic.’ But when you see 18 seasons in a row and not one single model outside a certain skin color? ...I don’t get it. Beauty is universal. These doors have to open.” We couldn't agree more.
Check out the whole sneak preview on Elle.com. The issue will be available on December 17, and we guess this will do until then. (Elle)
