"Like, so many common themes on Rookie are about dealing with change," Tavi Gevinson says in her BULLETT Magazine profile. "I think that’s one of the hardest things about growing up: having to find your identity, how strange it is to feel attached to things and then not." For its Evolution Issue, BULLETT pegged Gevinson as its star, and rightly so! The brilliant mind behind Rookie is, whether she likes it or not, the face of a maturing youth — a generation growing up on the Internet and evolving with the plugged-in world.
It's fitting that BULLETT featured Tavi on the cover of its first-ever, strictly digital edition. Her career trajectory, from past, present, to future, has been inherently digital. “I’m very happy when I meet a Rookie reader who didn’t know who I was; readers who didn’t read my blog, who may not even know who I am now," she says. "Because then I think, oh good, this is a real thing in the real world that people understand, it has a life of its own, it’s not just this thing in my head, it’s not about me."
In a way, though, Rookie will never not be about Tavi. The world is still just as fascinated with her today as they were years prior, when she was just a 12-year-old, pint-sized blogger. How is she growing up? Where does she go from here? Well, R29 got the exclusive sneak peek at the photo spread, which depict a growing Tavi, if not quite a grown-up Tavi. Sure, she's been the subject of many "oohs" and "aahs" when it comes to how elegantly she's grown into herself, but looks are merely the icing on the cake. What matters here is the mind behind it all, one that's not finished maturing, and bravely willing to admit that. Take a look after the jump.
