Oh, the weekend — a time for catching up with friends, engaging in epic restaurant hopping, and trying to find time to get a run or two in. We all know the drill of a quick before-or-after work workout, but might the weekend be the best time to up your heart rate a little?

The experts over at Shape and FitSugar put together a little list of the eight best reasons to use your weekend to optimize those workouts. Like? Well, obviously, it's a great time to go long. Maybe a quick run is all you can fit in before jetting to the office, but the weekend offers time to push yourself a little further. Maybe opt to add on a mile to your usual run or another 15 to 30 minutes to your gym time.
Also important? Breaking your routine up. You might be set in your weekly workout ways, but Saturdays and Sundays allow for the time needed to travel to a new studio or trainer.
A favorite here at Refinery29? Getting some cardio in the outdoors. It's hard to make a regular trip to your local mountain for a hike on a Tuesday evening — and if you can, we're jealous — so use weekends as an opportunity to go the extra mile. Then, mix exciting, practical workouts with entertainment and fun.
Click through to read all the ways you can maximize that post-brunch routine. (Shape)
