It’s been a bumper year for movies, hasn’t it? With 12 Years A Slave, Captain Phillips, Gravity, and the Dallas Buyers Club delighting cinema audiences around the world. And, let’s not forget the critics either. As the year draws to a close, the most prestigious event in the Hollywood calendar, the 86th Academy Awards, is fast approaching. And, with that comes a unique situation. There are too many great movies in the running for Oscar nominations.
The nominations will formally be announced on January 16, but that hasn’t stopped a lot of studios and networks to hastily postpone their latest blockbusters to 2014 to ease the pressure off the 2013 nominations list. Releases, such as George Clooney’s The Monuments Men and the highly anticipated Nicole Kidman showpiece, Grace of Monaco, have both been delayed to next year to protect their Oscar-worthy potential. Tim Gray, the awards editor at Variety, tells the Independent, “It's a really crowded race this year…I've talked to several people including Harvey Weinstein and Michael Barker, the co-president of Sony Classics…Both said they thought this was the best year for film they could remember.”
Whilst we’re more than happy to wait 'til next year to bring in a wave of new breathtaking screen action, we wonder if it will only lead to another backlog of Oscar-worthy flicks. What about you? Do you think this postponement is a good idea? (Independent)
