Tavi Gevinson Knows It Isn't Easy Being A Feminist

How do you define feminism? Merriam-Webster's definition is pretty simple: "The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities." But, in reality, it's a much more complicated concept, as the incomparable Tavi Gevinson so eloquently explains in the video she made for MAKERS: Women Who Make America, a digital platform dedicated to championing the stories of American women who are making a difference.

The style icon and founder of Rookie addresses the stigma surrounding the word feminism that causes women to disassociate themselves from it: "If you are a feminist, you're angry…or man-hating…taking up space. No one wants to be that person." Gevinson goes on to argue that young women aren't encouraged to speak up, which only compounds the problem.

Check out the video below and listen to the wise words this 17-year-old has to offer. We think it's time to start "taking up some space." And, how do you define the term? Let us know in the comments. (Makers)
