It's Wednesday, Chicago, which means we are almost to that point where you can leave the office in anticipation of a longer weekend. But if you've had your share of the Windy City (is that possible?), the rad new personal travel service Vayable gave us the 411 on the top-five places to visit, courtesy of local insiders.
Connect with Nature in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
Distance: Less than two hours from Chicago.
Why: Get some fresh air and completely escape the echo chamber of a city in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The park houses four National Natural Landmarks and is filled with sand dunes, rivers, prairies, forest, and more.
When You Get Back: You’ll return with a clear mind and an I-can-do-anything attitude.
Unwind with Wine in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Distance: Less than four hours from Chicago.
Why: Let go of the hustle and bustle of the city with a crisp glass of pinot grigio amidst Cedar Rapids’ wine country. Unwind with friends or a significant other before returning to the daily grind.
When You Get Back: After treating yourself with some much-needed R&R, you’ll come back to Chicago ready to get back into the game.
Get Theatrical in Stratford, Ontario
Distance: Less than six hours from Chicago.
Why: The Stratford Shakespeare Festival, which is in season from April to November, offers plays across four stages at low prices. Explore the rural southwestern corner of Ontario while enjoying the art of theatre.
When You Get Back: The Shakespearean plays will leave you in a sharp, cultured state of mind. Hello, genius!
Find R&R in Stillwater, Minnesota
Distance: Less than six hours from Chicago.
Why: Take a break from the fast life and slow down in Stillwater. Shop in the authentic local mom-and-pop shops selling antiques, art, and classic books, and sip on a malt with your S.O. like it's 1950.
When You Get Back: You’ll have a less hurried take on life, which will help keep stress at bay — bonus!
Go Country in Nashville, Tennessee
Distance: Less than seven hours from Chicago.
Why: Transport yourself to a whole new world, where cowboy boots, big hair, and accents are abound. The capital of country music has plenty to offer any fan of the genre, but the city has a surprising and thriving alternative rock scene that can’t be missed.
When You Get Back: The music will bring you back to Chicago with new inspiration and creativity.
