Tell us about your relationship and what you were like growing up.
"We were always really close. We lived overseas our whole lives, moving every three years and traveling a lot, so we were best friends for ages. I remember Sabrina being the natural performer. I was always drawing or doing other artistic endeavors, and more often than not, had my nose stuck in a book! We played together a lot and were always doing things like making furniture and dishes for our Barbies, and organizing long meandering 'plays,' which we would charge our parents 10-cents to attend."
Tell us more about what each of you do for a living.
"Eunice, as our creative director, does most of our illustration. I come up with creative concepts and provide art direction, and manage most of the business operations. We make all our major decisions together."
What do you love about working with your sibling?
"We are a great creative team — we really riff off each other in brainstorming sessions, it's always hilarious when we get rolling. Sabrina's a perfect complement to my illustration and design skills. Plus, we can be totally honest with each other without worrying about stepping on toes, which is a real benefit, creatively — the results are always better when we both have input."
Let’s talk sibling rivalry — do you guys ever fight?
"Pretty much never! The only tensions we’ve generally had have been when one person is feeling more responsibility for the business than the other, but we’ve been careful to communicate and jointly make the big, and most stressful, decisions. Eunice is very innately easy-going and I’ve learned to have faith that, through a combination of good planning and experience, we can find creative solutions to just amount any challenge. Our partnership with Egg Press
is a great example!"
Describe a typical day together — what do you guys like to do?
"We chat about projects that are in the works, review designs in progress, and catch-up in general. Then, we delve into whatever work we need to do. Our favorite thing is to brainstorm new concepts and card ideas, and trolling Pinterest for inspiration. We invariably crack each other up and get super excited about the possibilities, which is always a lot of fun. We have very similar, possibly somewhat juvenile, senses of humor — there's a lot of hilariously inappropriate stuff that never makes it to the cards."
What’s one thing you’ve learned from the other?
"I've learned to trust my business instincts and to trust myself as a business person. There's a lot I've learned drawing silly things for a living that surprisingly translates into being savvy about how to run a business!"
"I’ve learned from Eunice to make more time for myself, doing this allows me to be more creative and fulfilled. I used to not understand how Eunice could pack French lessons, dinners with friends, pilates classes, chiropractor appointments, all into her busy schedule. The end result, though, is feeling more relaxed, happy, creative, and fulfilled."
