Times they are a changing. In light of England and Wales recently legalising same-sex weddings, the Oxford English Dictionary is showing its support by amending its definition of “marriage.” Nice one!
Currently, OxfordDictionaries.com defines marriage as a “formal union of a man and a woman, typically as recognised by law, by which they become husband and wife.” But that seems a little old hat. Now, the definition will soon include gay couples, too — and given the dictionary is the leading authority on the English language, that’s a pretty major deal. Speaking out about the amendment, an Oxford University Press spokeswoman states, “We continually monitor the words in our dictionaries, paying particular to those words whose usage is shifting, so yes, this will happen with marriage." After being passed by Parliament on July 18, gay marriage finally got the go-ahead it has been waiting for, but now, this news comes as an appreciated extra say-so. Dictionary, we tip our hats.
