Toting a sign emblazoned with the words of Malcolm X, Solange Knowles joined her fellow Brooklynites this weekend in a peaceful protest against last week's "not guilty" verdict for George Zimmerman. Brooklyn residents gathered at Borough Hall to voice their disapproval in the decision over the 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, as well as sign an NAACP petition to pursue federal civil-rights charges against Zimmerman.
The singer-songwriter showed up dressed in cutoff shorts and a T-shirt, and without much fanfare. Her sign read: "I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it's for or against." Though we're accustomed to seeing Knowles take the stage to sing, in this instance, she picked up the mic up instead to speak up about her feelings of injustice.

Later, Knowles tweeted, "Seeing & gathering with people today/tonight all for the same fight helped to restore my faith in humanity." We have to say, watching Knowles so active in her community made us feel pretty optimistic about humanity, too.
