Tell us a little bit about what you do.
"I have a band with Jean-Benoît Dunckel from Air, which is called Tomorrow’s World
. We’ve just released our first album, so I’ve been touring that. I also DJ with my partner Nova Dando
and I have a pop project called The New Sins so when I’m in London I work on writing for that, too."What does your average day involve?
"There isn’t really an average day because my work is so varied. Last week, I was on tour and this week I’m in London doing lots of shoots. I guess when I’m not away, an average day would be in the studio — that’s my favourite part of the job and my favourite place to be."
Vintage Yves Saint Laurent blouse, Whistles trousers, and vintage Ferragamo shoes.
What has been the most memorable moment of your career to date?
"The Mercury Prize springs to mind. It’s such a prestigious thing to be part of and my former band, The New Young Pony Club, were nominated for it, which was amazing."
What is the best piece of style advice you’ve ever been given?
How would you describe your personal style?
"I would say classic. I have a lot of trench coats, cashmere jumpers, silk blouses, simple trousers or knee-length skirts, and nice flat shoes. That is kind of my day-to-day look but then I go on stage a lot and I wear outrageous things for that."
Commes des Garcons purse.
What is the most prized possession in your wardrobe?
"At the moment I think it is the Miu Miu mirrored dress I wore in the shoot — it’s a real showstopper. I got it when I was DJing at the pop-up club they opened last year called Club Miu Miu, which was open for 24 hours. I choose this dress to wear and they very kindly gave it to me."
Tell us a bit about the fashion and beauty essentials you can't live without.
"A good pair of boots, a nice cashmere jumper because it’s cozy, a comfy skirt and tights and a good coat to keep warm. Beauty-wise I always put red lipstick on if I’m going to do an interview or a shoot, it smartens everything up. I really like Liz Earle skincare and I always use a lot of that on tour. We played at the Isle of Wight festival and she gave us hampers worth of stuff. I thought I’ll give it a go and I’ve never looked back. My skin was completely transformed since then."
Jaeger polo neck, Miu Miu dress and shoes.
What is the toughest part of being on tour?
"Being away from your loved ones and friends — because I’m really close to them."
How do you solve the style challenges of life on tour?
"I’ve got it down to a fine art now as I’ve been touring for the last eight years. I’ve got travel versions of everything and I have a capsule wardrobe so it’s not too bad now. I buy duplicates of things that I like, so sometimes I just leave things in my suitcase and it’s all good to go. I have duplicates of all my cosmetics, too, so they just sit in the case."
Has your style evolved since the start of your career?
"I think I’m a bit more grown-up now. I bit more feminine than I was. Just a little more womanly, more tailored."
What designer labels do you love to wear?
"I love Margiela, Miu Miu, Chloé, and Comme des Garcons. Yves Saint Laurent is my favourite designer. Yves Saint Laurent has that charm; it’s my ideal look. I love Miu Miu for its quirkiness. I also really like Jean-Charles De Castelbajac. He’s a really good friend of mine and always gives me amazing things to wear on stage."
What can we we look forward to seeing from you this year?
"Tomorrow’s World are going to release a new single really soon and we’re halfway through writing a second album, in which I’m really excited about developing the sound that we’ve started. Pushing it further. I think we’re going to do something really fun and upbeat."
Who are the other bands that have caught your eye of late?
"My friend Igor, who was in New Young Pony Club with me, he’s doing a solo project called Igor Volk
— he supported us at the ICA and I really like his music. I also like the new James Holden
Who are your style icons?
"I really like the models in the Helmut Newton campaigns. That’s my dream woman – the Yves Saint Laurent Helmut Newton look. I also like Jane Birkin, Charlotte Rampling, and Brigitte Bardot. I love her."
Vintage Thierry Mugler skirt and Whistles high heels.
What kind of music did you listen to growing up? How did it inform your current taste in music?
"I have older brothers and sisters, so in our house it was always Prince, Bowie, Human League, and early acid house as well. My parents always listened to Bacharach. And I was also a huge Madonna fan."
As a DJ, what is your failsafe song to get a party started?
"I would say 'Let’s Go Crazy' by Prince. It’s so upbeat and I like the lyrics."
