Forget Face Shape, Philip Treacy Reveals What You Need To Know About Choosing A Hat

With wedding season fast approaching, milliner-to-the-stars Philip Treacy spoke to Vogue about the do’s and don’ts of hat shopping. And the advice is good. Forget what you’ve heard or read before, this advice is the real deal. Firstly Treacy makes the valid point about outfit choice, “So my advice is to always choose something simple – an expressive outfit, plus a hat, can be frightening.” The next tip he offers is the most enlightening, “Don’t listen to those rules about face shape. Try on 100 different hats if you can, until you find the one that suits you best. It’s a trial and error thing.”

And as for fascinators as a sartorial option, Treacy offers these pearls of wisdom, “They’re okay – I don’t have a huge issue with them. But they’re the lazy option. You don’t need to be lazy! Ultimately though, you have to go with whatever makes you feel good.” We second that motion, who’s up for a trying-on session at Peter Jones’s Hat department? We’ll be the ones in the marabou.
