We’re Hardly Surprised: M&S Win Most Sustainable High-Street Retailer

A heartfelt congratulations to Marks and Spencer, who won, at the 2013 Sustainable City Awards, the prize of Most Sustainable High Street Retailer. It was the first year that the British Fashion Council took part in these awards to produce a fashion category. Eco-fashion expert Livia Firth was also on hand as part of the selection committee. As the BFC’s Caroline Rush commented, “Fashion is full of possibilities and as an industry we are full of creativity, this makes fashion a powerful tool in ensuring sustainability is at the core of all business practice.”
It is a sentiment clearly seen in M&S’s day-to-day operations. Only recently, they persuaded everyone to shwop with them for Oxfam. All we had to do to shwop (sorry, that word does not get any easier to write) is to donate old clothes through M&S stores that can go on to be recycled, resold, or reused. All proceeds raised benefitted people living in poverty. A classic idea from a classic high-street brand. Long may this type of sustainability continue. (Drapers)
