In what is probably the best Valentine's Day present that Illinois citizens could ask for, the Senate has voted to legalize gay marriage. In a vote of 34-21, our state's politicians took a stand for marriage equality and human rights. The bill will now head to the House of Representatives for approval, and if it passes, Illinois will become the first Midwest state to legalize same-sex nuptials.
Following on the heels of gay-rights victories in Maryland, Maine, and Washington, we couldn't be happier about this movement. While we know that the bill still has some hurdles to overcome, we'll rest a little easier knowing that our fellow Chicagoans are that much closer to enjoying the same rights as the rest of us.
