Everyone's got a gimmick these days, but Casey Legler seems like someone who's just fallen into her career — attention-grabbing as it is — because she's good at it. She's a female woman (oxymorons!) currently working as a male model at Ford. Time did a lengthy profile with Legler, in which she talks about her unusual modeling skill, and her considerably cool life outside of it.
Legler first worked as a model when a friend at Muse Magazine invited her to pose as a man at the last minute. When an agent at Ford got wind, she was offered a contract almost immediately, to work exclusively on the agency's male model team. Before she began modeling, she was — and is — an artist or, as she puts it, an "artmaker." Her body of work can, in her opinion, be just about anything, and that includes modeling. But she's not necessarily in it to push gender boundaries or prove a point. In a philosophy we could all take note of, Legler says “I understand signifiers. We’re social creatures and we have a physical language of communicating with each other...but it would be a really beautiful thing if we could all just wear what we wanted, without it meaning something.” Amen to that.
