"If I was your boyfriend, I’d never let you go," or so go the lyrics of Justin Bieber's aptly titled single, Boyfriend." Ironic foreshadowing? While that might be a little out of the Biebs' depth, we can't argue that most of the 18-year-old crooner's recent songs (e.g."As Long As You Love Me") are appropriate context to last night's news — the split with his girlfriend Selena Gomez, 20.
Not since Britney/Justin broke up in 2002 have our tweenage dreams been so crushed... here was a clean-cut couple that was rock-solid, a model of stability in the drug-ridden/sex-tape-scattered waters of teenage stardom. Hyperbole aside, we all kind of knew it was a matter of time before the pop princess and prince ditched the happy ending, and the cause was definitely in our stable of potential scenarios. Turns out Selener (talk about bad timing: Nicki Minaj's new duet with JB, "Beauty and a Beat," just bestowed Gomez that genius handle) ended the relationship due to "trust issues," according to People (usually a credible source). While Bieber, in an upcoming Oprah episode confesses, "I don't ever want her to feel like I'm ashamed of her," it seems that Gomez couldn't cope with the crazy schedules and heavy media scrutiny that's dogged the couple's nearly two years together.
Sadly, there is a Spears-Timberlake-like twist to the ending (nearly guaranteed future music video fodder). On Thursday night, after Bieber's performance at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, he was photographed going to Broadway's The Lion King with VS model Barbara Palvin, 19. Then, of course, the requisite tweet from Gomez, who shared a picture of Bieber with Palvin in the background, captioning it an enigmatic "'....'." Palvin (below, in a Twitpic she posted) issued a couple of her own tweets debunking any foul play, one just an hour ago: "last time im saying it. please calm down.there is nothing going on w him.i met him and did a pic w him. wouldnt u do the same?:) " The legions of Bielebers the world over, currently throwing away their Gomez voodoo dolls and planning their strategies to be his next squeeze, would obviously agree. After all, this is a dude that promises: "I can be a gentleman, anything you want." Let's end this with a #swag, shall we?
