How did the concept to collaborate with Audi for the green room come about?
Derek Lam: "Audi approached me. Initially, I didn’t think I could design a car, but when they said it was for the green room, I thought it was such a great idea! When collaborations do come my way, I'm very selective. I really love to have the same vocabulary. Audi is about great design, which is what I aspire to, as well. And, for a wonderful event like the Emmys, you get an amazing group of people together — so all in all, it was a great project."
Is this a hint that you may want to get into interior design?
"I would love to. You know, as a designer you should flex your muscles. And maybe I can design a real car for Audi someday. The interior only, though — I couldn’t do the technology."
If you were designing a car for Audi, what are the top three things you'd envision for your dream ride?
"Well, technology is really important to me. I’m really a tech geek when it comes to cars! But, I also think there's an important balance of understated luxury and a sense of warmth. But the most important thing with any experience I have — whether it’s the home, or car, or vacation — is that someone has thought of the details and has gone the extra mile to make the experience special."
