The word "Father" often evokes images of someone tall, stern, professional, and in his mid-50s. While this version of a dad is dear to our hearts, dads also come in about a million other varieties, and sometimes the typical tie/grill apron/pen cup routine ain't gonna work. Recently, we scoped two gifts that lit a fire under our collective ass. Not only are these gifts smart, purposeful, and handsome (remind you of anyone?), but they're also locally-made gems for gift-givers who want to spend their designated dad cash in Chicago.
1. Weekender bag by Sir & Madam. This locally-designed bag is made of heavyweight (manly) cotton canvas, and has a great structure. It's masculine and stylish and will soon become the go-to bag of choice for dads in their 20s and 60s alike. Sir & Madam Weekender Bag, $210, available at Sir & Madam, 938 North Damen Avenue (between Walton & Iowa streets); 773-489-6660.
2. Cigar Box Amps by Electric Apparatus. The almost-universal trait that dads have in common is that they all love music. Replace the MacGyvered rig that Dad is using now with a posh amplifier created from a cigar box. Possibly the coolest repurposing we've ever seen. Cigar Box Amps, $60, available at Shake Shop, 3247 West Fullerton Avenue (at Sawyer Avenue); 773-904-7690.
