Summer is right around the corner, and everyone seems to be talking about cleanses. But detoxes, cleanses, and fasts seem to have come under some scrutiny in recent months. What separates the Pressed Juicery Cleanses from the rest?
A lot of the confusion about cleanses and detoxes comes from the criticism towards some of the more extreme forms of cleansing. We do not advocate detoxing without proper nutritional and mental supplements as part of the program. To be honest, many of the cleanses that are coming out these days are quite similar and safe, which is wonderful. But we differ from cleanses such as the Master Cleanse, which does not incorporate any vegetables or fruit (besides lemon) and omits crucial vitamins and minerals that our bodies need.

You guys have the best thick and delicious almond milk that actually tastes like almonds. What makes your almond milk so delicious?

Thank you! That is such a compliment. To be honest, our almond milk is very simple, but the dates and the vanilla definitely make it thicker and more flavorful. We've tried to perfect our straining process as best we can, resulting in a consistency that makes it a little heartier. Our latest almond milk is flavored with cinnamon and cardamom—it tastes almost like a Chai and people are really digging it so we bring it back from time to time as a special. We are also about to launch a nut-free drink to give people with allergies a similar option to our almond milk. I'm really excited about that one.

There is always such an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables here in SoCal, how do you come up with the flavors?

We aim to find a balance between being creative with our flavors and keeping it really simple at the same time. We have our staple juices of course—the Greens, Roots, and Detox drinks which are part of our cleanse. But then we also have a variety of other juices that came out of a lot of experimentation. We are about to expand our menu to include quite a few new juices. After months of listening to customer feedback and finally finding some time to get creative in the kitchen again, we've come up with some combinations that we are super thrilled about. We like to do a couple of new drinks every so often incorporating seasonal fruits. Persimmons were a huge hit this past winter, and we just brought Watermelon Mint back now that it's getting warmer. We are so lucky to be in California and have access to the freshest produce around.

What's on the horizon for Pressed Juicery?
Ah...let's see. We would love to open more locations here in Southern California, and are about to begin our expansion, which includes a new spot in another part of town as well as a juice truck! We are also looking forward to being able to ship nationally through our website in the near future. We have only been open for 6 months, but the response has been overwhelming and we are so grateful. The most important factor that we keep in our minds when thinking about the future is making sure the juice is the freshest it can possibly be. We want to be able to reach as many people as possible without compromising our commitment to quality.

What's your favorite juice combination to whip up at home? Why's it your fave?
My favorite juice to make at home is a simple greens with apple and lemon. Of course, I don't have a hydraulic press at home, so I usually just drink a Pressed Greens 1 or 2 for breakfast, but on those rare occasions I go back to the first combination that got my wheels spinning about the joys of juicing. You can always replace any of the greens with ones that you prefer—just remember the more leafy greens the better! This usually yields enough to keep me going into the afternoon.
1 head romaine
2 pieces of celery
5 stalks kale (or other leafy greens)
1 to 2 Fuji apples
1 lemon (lightly peeled)
1 Tbsp ginger
1/2 bunch of watercress
1 dash of cayenne pepper
